The polls had Donald Trump winning Iowa on the Republican side and the pundits predicted Bernie Sanders would upset Hillary Clinton. Yet in the end, neither of those scenarios came to pass.
“If ever there was an election year when you can’t predict everything, this is it. All bets are off,” The Daily Show host Trevor Noah said Wednesday night. “Although there is one thing you can rely on: Ted Cruz being a dick.”
Yes, Ben Carson has accused Ted Cruz of playing “dirty tricks” in the final hours leading up to the Iowa caucuses this week, telling voters the neurosurgeon had dropped out of the race when really he was just returning home for a change of clothes.
Calling the debacle his “favorite story of the week,” Noah told his audience, “We are going to get back to Ted Cruz being a dick, but just, for a second, can we acknowledge how weird this is? It’s the biggest night of the campaign, and Ben Carson decides to fly halfway across the country to get fresh clothes.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump tried to hijack the story to justify his loss and Cruz apologized for what he characterized as a false story spread by CNN. “If this is what Ted Cruz does to his friends, it’s no wonder he doesn’t have friends,” Noah said. “He’s the slimiest people in the world.”
“I mean, at the end of the day I guess the truth is there are some things about the campaign that you can predict,” the host concluded. “Because now we know how the candidates will behave the rest of the campaign. Trump will try to make it about himself. Carson will just disappear. And Cruz will sell his mother if he thinks it will get him another five points.”
