Another Hollywood power couple bites the dust.

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have broken up, People reported, marking the end of a long-running romance that once seemed to be headed toward marriage.

The Fifty Shades of Grey actress, 35, and the Coldplay frontman, 48, dated on and off for nearly eight years, but a source told People, “It feels final this time.”

The pair had reportedly been engaged for “years,” with Johnson spotted wearing an emerald ring on her left hand as recently as Nov. 2024—four years after she was first seen wearing it in Oct. 2020. However, a source close to the couple told People last year that they were in “no rush to get married.”

Johnson reflected on relationships in a Los Angeles Times interview published Wednesday to promote her new film Materialists. The piece still referred to her as being together with Martin.

“For a long time we’ve all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world. When people should get married. Divorce is bad. All these things that actually, if you think about it, why is divorce bad?” she said. “Why do people have to get married or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn’t matter.”

The actress and the musician were first linked romantically in 2017 and repeatedly sparked breakup rumors over the years. In Aug. 2024, a rep for the Madame Web actress shut down swirling speculation, telling People the couple was “happily together.”

A source told the outlet at the time, “Sure, they’ve had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”

Martin and Johnson were last photographed together in Malibu, California on May 16. In January, they were seen holding hands in Mumbai, India, where the “Yellow” singer was on tour with Coldplay.

“I love watching him (perform),” Johnson told Bustle last year. “I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don’t know... I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing.”

In the same interview, Johnson gushed about being a stepmom to Martin’s children from a previous relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow, 51. “I love those kids like my life depends on it,” Johnson said of Moses, 17, and Apple, 19. “With all my heart.”

Apart from Paltrow, Martin previously dated actress Annabelle Wallis. Johnson dated rock musician Matthew Hewitt before being linked with Martin.
