In a joint press conference with President Obama on Wednesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron said he could not reach his wife for hours in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. Samantha Cameron flew into New York on Sept. 10 for work and was shopping in Midtown when the attack occurred, after which cellphone service went down and her husband couldn’t reach her. “I will never forget the five hours of trying to get hold of her and she will never forget the New Yorkers she met that day or that sense of solidarity that she felt and has felt ever since that day,” Cameron said. Samantha Cameron was pregnant with their first child, Ivan, on the trip and her husband had recently been elected to Parliament. A source said that she has called it a “strange” time to be in New York, but “it helped them gain an insight into the impact of terrorism on people’s lives.”
