Thankfully things didn’t end tragically at Yankee Stadium Saturday when Cleveland Indians pitcher David Huff took one to the head from Yankees hitter Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod’s swing was so strong that the baseball ricocheted off Huff’s head and traveled nearly 275 feet from home plate. The stadium fell silent when Huff went down, but the pitcher gave a thumb’s up to indicate he was OK after medical staff examined him. A subsequent CT scan at the hospital indicated no loss of consciousness or memory. Though base coaches wear helmets, pitchers generally don just their baseball caps. The only Major League fatality in modern history occurred in 1920, when Indians player Ray Chapman was struck in the head by the Yankees’ Carl Mays.
