Bill de Blasio’s apparent silence over his deceased father was broken Monday when the New York Post tracked down public records showing that Warren Wilhelm died in 1979 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A former WWII veteran, Wilhelm was gravely ill with cancer when he decided to end his own life. An article in the New Milford Times from 1979 describes how a woman “found a man dead in vehicle” on a July morning. De Blasio released a statement in response to the news, confirming that his father “tragically ended his life while suffering terminal cancer," adding that it's a "private part" of his family's life.
