A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the northernmost tip of Haiti Saturday night, killing at least 10 people, according to the country’s civil protection agency. Another 135 people were injured in the quake, which struck an area about 12.3 miles northwest of the port of Port-de-Paix. Numerous homes and buildings have also reportedly been damaged. “Damage has been recorded mainly in the Far North. All my sympathies to the victims. The executive at the highest level is mobilized to provide appropriate answers. I call on the population to be cautious and calm,” Prime Minister Jean-Henry Céant wrote on Twitter. Haiti is especially susceptible to earthquakes, and tens of thousands of residents remain displaced after a 7.1-magnitude quake struck in 2010, killing more than 220,000 people.
