Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) won the state’s gubernatorial election on Tuesday night, defeating Republican candidate Ed Gillespie. Democrats were casting the victory as a rebuke to President Donald Trump, who threw his arms around Gillespie by tweeting his support and recording robo-calls. But the president did not campaign alongside Gillespie in the state where Hillary Clinton defeated him by nearly five points in 2016.
