Senate Democrats blocked a bill Tuesday night clearing the way for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline that would transport petroleum from Canada to the Gulf Coast. The 59-41 vote was spurred in large part by by Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Democrat from Louisiana who is facing a runoff election against a Republican next month. Landrieu seemed to hope that she and enough Republicans would approve the Keystone addition in the Senate (the House has approved it) and convince conservatives to vote for her. Even if it had, President Obama has said repeatedly he would veto it.
