Toxicology tests on New York Rangers hockey player Derek Boogaard, 28, attributed his death to an accidental overdose of the painkiller oxycodone mixed with alcohol. Boogaard was found dead in his apartment May 13, and it was suspected that a serious concussion had been the cause of death. Reports last week that he was enrolled in a substance-abuse rehab program were confirmed Friday in a statement by his family: "After repeated courageous attempts at rehabilitation... Derek had been showing tremendous improvement but was ultimately unable to beat this opponent.” The chief medical examiner in Hennepin County said Minnesota law prohibited him from discussing Boogaard's case, but he did allow that evidence showed the death was not a suicide attempt.
