After thirty years of imprisonment, two mentally disabled half-brothers were released in North Carolina thanks to DNA evidence implicated another man of the rape and murder they had been accused of. Henry Lee McCollum has been on death row since 1983, and Leon Brown was serving a life sentence. The two confessed to the crime, but later said they had been coerced under immense pressure. The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission found DNA on a piece of evidence matched a man who had a history of rape convictions.
