The Democratic National Committee falsely claimed that it spent $1 million on the Alabama Senate race, according to new documents. McClatchy reports that the party actually spent around $250,000 on the race, in which Democrat Doug Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore. After the election, the DNC falsely claimed the $1 million number. Three-quarters of that was raised from fundraising emails—but not actually spent by the committee. The party has struggled as of late to raise money—it pulled in just $67 million in 2017 compared to the Republican National Committee, which raised $133 million. Neither party apparatus was particularly enthused about going all in on the Alabama race.
