According to secret documents obtained by The Inercept, the FBI can spy on journalists and obtain their phone records without first asking a judge or informing their employers. Many different FBI officials and agents can sign off on record seizures deemed “relevant” to a national security investigation, according to the documents. “The FBI is entirely able to go after journalists and with only one extra hoop they have to jump through,” said Trevor Timm, executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation.
