Does Sarkozy Spy on Reporters?

France's journalists may have a reason to be extra careful these days. Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has ordered the country's internal security service to investigate reporters and uncover sources who embarrass his government, according to a report in the French weekly, Le Canard Enchaîné. The Elysée Palace denied the report, but it comes after a series of burglaries at the homes and offices of France's top reporters. Other sources tell Le Monde they have confirmed the existence of the anti-leak squad. The allegations have earned Sarkozy attacks from the country's left, where one leader called him the "spiritual son of Richard Nixon."
