After the Ferguson City Council voted yesterday to amend the consent decree on local police reforms it had negotiated with the Department of Justice, the federal agency sued the city. “The Department of Justice will take the necessary legal actions to ensure that Ferguson’s policing and court practices comply with the Constitution and relevant federal laws," Vanita Gupta, head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division said in a statement. During a Wednesday afternoon press conference, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said, "Our investigation revealed a community in distress" and that Ferguson's balking "decision leaves us with no further choice" but to file suit.
