At least 24 people died after a ship capsized at the meeting of the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. Seven people were rescued, but nine others are still missing. According to the Turkish coast guard, the passengers included 12 children and seven women. Some reports suggest the migrants were from Afghanistan and were heading toward Romania. They reportedly paid thousands of euros for the attempt to enter Europe. The UN estimates that thousands of migrants died attempting to sail to Europe this year. As many as 170 migrants disappeared in a single incident when a boat sunk off the coast of Libya in August.
