A wave of violence rocked Iraq on Saturday and Sunday as car bombs and shootings killed at least 70 across the country. Thirteen died on Sunday alone as the coordinated attacks have intensified during the month of Ramadan. Almost 600 people have been killed so far this month and more than 2,700 have been killed this year in Iraq, raising fears that the country will descend into an all-out sectarian conflict again. Officials said the bombs on Saturday went off after the breaking of the Ramadan fast, when many people were out shopping or socializing. The deadliest of the attacks on Sunday came near Kirkuk, where gunmen opened fire on a Kurdish checkpoint, killing five.
