At least 48 people were killed Tuesday when a bus plunged off a cliff and onto a rocky beach in Peru. Authorities say the crash occurred along a dangerous stretch of highway north of Lima known as the “Devil’s Curve.” The bus, transporting 57 people, was struck by a tractor trailer just before it went over the cliff. Authorities said bodies have been recovered from inside the bus, the Pacific Ocean, and along the beach. Six people were hospitalized with injuries. “It’s very sad for us as a country to suffer an accident of this magnitude,” Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said in a statement after the tragedy. Many of the passengers were reportedly returning home to Lima after celebrating the New Year’s holiday outside the city.
