In a surprise move, a man accused of kidnapping an 11-year-old in 1991, holding her captive for 18 years, and fathering her two children has pleaded not guilty to the crime. Phillip Garrido and his wife were arrested in 2009 after they surfaced with their alleged victim, Jaycee Dugard, in California. Police say she was raped and forced to live in tents in the Garridos’ backyard in Northern California, with neither Dugard nor the two children Garrido fathered by her receiving medical attention or education. Garrido’s lawyer said prior to the hearing that his client would likely plead guilty in a deal that would put him in prison for life. Nancy Garrido, who has previously confessed to the crime, also pleaded not guilty.
