Dunkirk vanquished all comers at the box office for the second weekend running, contributing to a gross domestic total of $102.8 million. The well-reviewed World War II film from director Christopher Nolan beat out The Emoji Movie for the top spot. Despite critical reviews, The Emoji Movie, from Sony Pictures Animation, still managed to finish second, with $25.7 million. “It’s great when the critics and audiences are in sync, but in the end, it comes down to: Has the film reached the intended audience?” said Adrian Smith, president of domestic distribution at Sony. “Seeing these results, it clearly has.” The R-rated Girls Trip took third place, and Charlize Theron’s new Atomic Blonde took fourth.
