If anyone is looking to find out about Eat Pray Love before its Friday release, good luck: All reviews are embargoed until it opens this week. But despite the ban, some critics’ early evaluations started trickling in Wednesday. The Hollywood Reporter says the film “never ventures, even once, into a scene that does reek of comfy familiarity,” while the New York Daily News calls the movie a “satisfactory substitute” for anyone in desperate need of a vacation. The Orlando Sentinel gives the film 2.5 out of 4 stars and calls it “Sex and the City with Carrie shopping for spirituality.” The reviewer adds that “it’s damn near as insufferable as” the popular book by Elizabeth Gilbert, upon which the film is based. The Associated Press critic contends Eat Pray Love will most likely satisfy fans of Gilbert’s memoir and Monsters & Critics says director Ryan Murphy has done a “terrific job” of bringing the book’s “globetrotting experiences into an organic shape.”
