Egypt Rival Rallies Turn Deadly

On Friday night, Egypt was stage to hundreds of thousands of protesters demonstrating in rival rallies in support of and in opposition to the military overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi. In Tahrir Square, army supporters lit fireworks in celebration, but 17 were killed and hundreds injured at a "peaceful protest" by thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters in Cairo. Fighting in Alexandria claimed seven lives, and additional hundreds were reportedly hurt. State media reported that Morsi has been detained for 15 days and will be investigated for charges that he conspired with Hamas to carry out attacks in the 2011 revolution.
