An Egyptian hotel worker was arrested in Saudi Arabia Sunday after a video he took while having breakfast with a female Saudi coworker went viral, according to a Monday report from The Independent. BBC News noted that the video violates the law in Saudi Arabia, which stipulates that single men must sit apart from women in public eateries. The Independent added that the man was also illegally working in a position restricted to Saudis. In the 30-second video of the pair’s breakfast, the duo jokes about eating together alone and the woman, dressed in a burqa, appears to feed him. The Saudi Ministry of Labour and Social Development, which arrested the man, accused him of “committing several violations and taking up a post exclusively reserved for Saudis.” The Independent added that the owner of the hotel where the pair works was also questioned “for failing to adhere to spatial controls for employing women.” Many Saudis agreed with the arrest, noting that the pair’s conduct flouts Saudi Arabian law and culture. “I am a Saudi [woman] and I swear I want them to punish her with him,” tweeted one Saudi user cited by BBC. “Laughter, eating at the workplace... where are your limits?” Others defended the pair: Another Twitter user cited by BBC wrote that colleagues should be able to “joke or eat or do anything else among the general relations of humans.” The man’s identity, and his relationship with the woman, remains unclear.
