Eight Killed in New Orleans House Fire

Lost control of indoor fire on freezing night.

New Orleans firefighters responded to a 2 a.m. call Tuesday morning to find an abandoned Ninth Ward Building consumed in a blaze that killed eight people. Survivors, who escaped out a window, say the residents of the building were burning wood in a barrel to stay warm, as temperatures in New Orleans dropped to around freezing overnight. The ages and genders of the dead could not be determined.
