Elon Musk cheered after newly sworn-in President Donald Trump mentioned Mars in his inauguration speech on Monday. “We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars,” Trump said, “by launching American astronauts to plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars.” After the president made the remark, the richest man in the world put up his arms and looked directly in the camera as he goofily smiled and put two thumbs up. Musk has stated that he wants to colonize the Red Planet in just a few years, with Trump reinforcing the idea as NASA’s Artemis program is expected to focus more on Mars during his presidency. The SpaceX founder has stood by Trump throughout his campaign and has launched himself into politics by becoming the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency Department, otherwise known as DOGE. Musk’s possible impact on the next four years was seen as he joined Trump’s circle standing right near the president at Monday’s swearing-in. After the ceremony, the billionaire tweeted out a video of his reaction with the caption, “AMERICA IS GOING TO MARS.”
