Elton John has donated about $1.5 million to mothers2mothers, also known as m2m, to help prevent the spread of HIV from mothers to their children across Sub-Saharan Africa. An estimated 1.4 million women with HIV become pregnant every year, and without medical intervention and education, 40 percent of them could pass on the virus to their children, usually during pregnancy or breastfeeding in infancy. Elton John’s grant, from his AIDS foundation, will be dispersed over several years and is targeted at developing programs and clinical efforts to educate both healthy women and those with HIV. “We want an HIV-free generation in Africa and m2m is going to help us get there,” the singer said.
