Embattled Berkeley Provost Resigns

The Berkeley provost criticized for his lax discipline announced his resignation on Friday. Citing his wife’s poor health, Claude Steele said, “The choice has thus become clear: I can no longer offer UC Berkeley the time and level of commitment it needs from its (provost), while at the same time being a part of my family in the way I want to be.” Steele became the center of controversy last month when a law school staff member revealed that she had been sexually harassed by the school’s dean and Steele had punished the dean with only a temporary pay cut and an order to undergo counseling.
