David Sweat told authorities that he and Richard Matt planned to go to Mexico, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday. Apparently that plan had to be abandoned when prison worker Joyce Mitchell failed to pick them up outside of prison. Plan B was Canada, where Sweat was headed before he was shot twice by a state trooper on Sunday. According to Cuomo, Sweat said he and Matt separated five days ago because he thought Matt was slowing him down. Both men evidently used used black pepper to throw bloodhounds off their trail as they spent three weeks on the run following a cinematic escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility. Sweat's DNA was found on a pepper shaker near the body of Matt, who was killed by authorities Friday. The pepper trick was featured in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke. “If you were writing a movie plot, they would say that this was overdone,” Cuomo said.
