The Ethiopian government said Wednesday that at least five European tourists kidnapped at gunpoint have been killed. They were part of a group of 27 foreigners—including two Americans—who were the target of an ambush in a remote corner of Ethiopia. Two Germans and two Ethiopians were also kidnapped in the attack, which Ethiopian officials have blamed on neighboring country Eritrea, an allegation the country’s envoy to the African Union dismissed as “an absolute lie.” The region of Afar, in which the attack occurred, has been described as containing some of the world’s most inhospitable terrain, and is a hideaway for bandits and rebel groups.
