The European Union has stepped up pressure on the Syrian government, banning all imports of Syrian oil starting Saturday. Syria sells 95 percent of its oil to Europe, and oil exports represent 25 percent of the country's income. Attempts by the U.S., Britain, and France to impose sanctions on Syria through the United Nations have so far been blocked by China and Russia. The new sanctions come as Syrian forces once again fired on protesters, killing at least 17 people Friday, according to human-rights groups.
