After reportedly reaching an impasse in talks on Monday, the European Union has decided to lift its arms embargo on Syrian rebels, British Foreign House Secretary Jack Hague said Monday. As the meeting between EU foreign ministers continued Monday evening, Britain faced major pushback from Austria, the Czech Republic, and Sweden, but apparently not enough to avoid reaching a consensus. French officials have been trying to verify whether Syrian troops loyal to President Assad have used chemical weapons, after the French newspaper Le Monde published a major exposé featuring firsthand accounts, photos, and video of the weapons.
