Ex-Chicago School Chief Pleads Guilty to Fraud

Admits to taking $2.3m in payouts.

On Tuesday the former head of Chicago Public Schools pleaded guilty to taking $2.3 million in bribes for allegedly steering millions of dollars worth of no-bid contracts to certain education firms. Barbara Byrd-Bennett previously ran the district until April 2015, when investigations into possible fraud began. She pleaded guilty to one of twenty charges; and in exchange, federal prosecutors will dismiss all 19 others.
