The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Wednesday that it was ordering U.S. airlines to inspect certain engine fan blades, a day after an engine exploded in midair on a Southwest Airlines jet. A female passenger inside the Boeing 737 was killed, and the flight made an emergency landing in Philadelphia. National Transportation Safety Board officials said a preliminary investigation led them to believe that a fan blade flung off of one of the engines, causing an explosion and flying debris.
