The famly of Elton Simpson said they are “struggling to understand” why he would open fire on a contest for cartoon drawings of Prophet Muhammad, according to a statement released through their lawyers in Phoenix. Simpson, along with Nadir Soofi, were named as the two suspects who were killed after they attacked the Draw Muhammad event in Garland, Texas, on Sunday. “We are sure many people in this country are curious to know if we had any idea of Elton’s plans,” the statement said. “To that we say, without question, we did not.” The statement said they “proudly support the men and women of our law-enforcement agencies,” and said they would have no further comment.
