A father and daughter charged in the death of Jacquelyn Smith were denied bail and have 10 days to be extradited back to Baltimore, a judge ruled at their arraignment Monday in Cameron County, Texas. Keith Smith, 52, and Valeria Smith, 28, were charged Sunday with murder and aggravated assault after their arrest in Texas. “When they apprehended the two individuals authorities in the county made the presumption that they were headed to Mexico,” Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said Monday.

The two initially told police in December that Jacquelyn was stabbed to death while giving money to a panhandler in Baltimore in the rain. Authorities now believe the incident was staged.
