An Oregon man is facing charges after allegedly rigging a wheelchair and a rat trap to fire shotgun blasts that prosecutors say left one FBI agent injured and thrust law-enforcement officers into “a scene from Indiana Jones.” The suspect, 66-year-old Gregory Rodvelt, allegedly placed elaborate and deadly booby traps all over a home that he’d been forced to forfeit as part of an elder-abuse case against him. According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Medford, Rodvelt outfitted a minivan with animal snares, lined the driveway with spike strips, and rigged a hot tub to roll over any person who entered the property’s front gate. The property was “much like a scene... from Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which actor Harrison Ford is forced to outrun a giant stone boulder that he inadvertently triggered by a booby trap switch,” the complaint reads. An FBI agent and state bomb technicians had visited the home at the request of a real-estate lawyer who was fighting Rodvelt to sell off the property. They reportedly managed to dodge the deadly hot tub and a slew of other traps, but somehow set off the rigged wheelchair, which sent a shotgun pellet into the FBI agent’s leg. Rodvelt, who had already been facing a number of charges in connection with an armed standoff in Phoenix in 2017, now faces one felony count of assault on a federal officer.
