Looks as though corruption reaches across the aisle, too. New York State Sen. Malcolm A. Smith, Councilman Dan Halloran, and four other politicians were arrested on charges that they were trying to rig New York City’s mayoral race. The scheme: Smith—a Democrat considering running on the Republican ticket—was allegedly bribing Republican politicians for support. "A show-me-the-money culture seems to pervade every level of New York government," said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who called the case "an unappetizing smorgasbord of graft and greed."
