The FBI will conduct an independent investigation in the case of 13-year-old Andy Lopez, a popular student who was shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Santa Rosa, Calif. after he was spotted holding a pellet gun that deputies thought looked like an AK-47 rifle. Sheriff Steve Freitas said in a statement on Friday that he will fully cooperate with federal investigators and welcomes their participation. A timeline released by police shows that a mere 10 seconds passed between when Freitas and his partner called dispatch to report a suspicious person to when they called back to say shots had been fired. The Sonoma County coroner said he found seven bullet wounds, two of which were fatal, in the boy’s body. The killing triggered numerous protests in Santa Rosa this week.
