It’s not just for the very obese any more: Now, slightly less heavy Americans can use the Lap-Band, the device that helps shrink stomachs and provides an alternative to the more invasive gastric-bypass surgery. The device’s manufacturer, Allergan, said the FDA has approved the Lap-Band’s use for patients with lower body mass indices than previously allowed and at least one weight-related health condition. That might be good news for dieters, but it’s even better news for Allergan, which will see its potential customer base expand from 15 million to more than 41 million people. Potential candidates will need cash, though, as the procedure can cost as much as $20,000.
