    Feds End Teamsters’ Mafia Monitoring

    Phil McCarten/Reuters

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has reached an agreement with the federal government to end 25 years of strict oversight to keep out mafia influence. The 1989 consent decree stemmed from a racketeering lawsuit brought by the Justice Department. Now the union has struck a deal with the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, to phase out the stringent government monitoring in favor of greater internal oversight. “While threats persist, the organized crime influence the government found to have reached the highest echelons of IBT leadership in 1988 has long been expunged,” said Bharara.
