Feds Seek New Nuke Wast Disposal Site

DUMP

Need special rail cars, too.

The federal government is attempting to overhaul the way we dispose of radioactive waste, but it doesn't have a place to store the used nuclear fuel quite yet. The U.S. Department of Energy has plans for an interim storage site by 2021 and a permanent site by 2048, but no location for either site has been confirmed. The Obama administration is pushing a new plan to use special rail cars to haul the 150-ton casks of waste. Idustry officials argue it's not a bad idea to start transportation planning, despite the lack of specific locale details. “You don't want to wait until you're close to opening the facility to try and design a rail car,” said Everett Redmond of the Nuclear Energy Institute.
