FIFA: Brazil Football Cup Will Continue

As more than a million people gather in 100 cities across Brazil to protest corruption in the government, FIFA is assuring football fans that the Confederations Cup—which sparked the outrage—will go on as planned. “Neither FIFA nor the local organizing committee have ever discussed the possibility of cancelling the tournament,” a spokesman told the BBC. The demonstrations—which have lasted nearly a week—began as a protest against high transport fares. Within hours, the movement morphed into a demonstration against the corruption of Brazil’s government as a whole. Much of the anger reportedly centers on the huge sum of money that the country has agreed to spend on the 2014 World Cup, set to take place next June 12–July 13.
