A firefighter was killed Monday battling the largest wildfire ever recorded in California. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced the news Monday night, saying it was “deeply saddened” that a firefighter died while seeking to contain the Mendocino Complex fire, a monster blaze that has destroyed 139 homes since it erupted late last month. Authorities have not yet released the name of the firefighter but said “fact finding on the accident” is underway. By Monday night, the fire, which consists of two separate blazes, had devoured more than 328,000 acres and was 67 percent contained.
