Firefighters battling a massive wildfire in northern Texas that has destroyed 40 homes announced on Thursday that progress had been made, after issuing mandatory evacuations in the region on Wednesday. A spokesman for the Texas Forest Service said some of the evacuations had been lifted. “We feel much better about this fire today,” he said; it is now 50 percent contained. The situation is less positive in Oklahoma City, where firefighters are run down from trying to put out several blazes over the past three days.
