The city of Fresnillo in Mexico marked a huge milestone on Sunday, as it inaugurated the country's first openly gay mayor. Benjamin Medrano won the seat even though his opponents tried to make an issue of his sexual orientation. Medrano, who grew up poor in Zacatecas state, eventually obtained a law degree, became a professional singer, and opened Fresnillo's first gay night club. Now that he's been elected, Medrano says his top priority is restoring security to the city, which has been caught in a turf war between drug cartels.
