When Continental Flight 3407 nosedived into a house outside of Buffalo early yesterday morning, all 49 people on board died. Today, the New York Post runs mini-profiles of several of the deceased: Gerry Nierwood, 64, a saxophonist who played with bands like Simon and Garfunkel and Liza Minnelli, was headed to Buffalo to play with Chuck Mangione and the Buffalo Philharmonic; Alison Des Forges, 67, was a senior adviser for Human Rights Watch and one of the world’s leading experts on the Rwandan genocide; Clay Yarber, 62, was a Vietnam veteran. Also mentioned in the Post is 9/11 widow Beverly Eckert, who was headed to Buffalo for what would have been her husband’s 58th birthday. She was going to take part in the presentation of a scholarship named in his honor at his old high school.
