Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s former president, has been diagnosed with cancer and will receive chemotherapy to deal with a malignant tumor in his larynx. “This is not a localized tumor,” according to a hospital spokeswoman, suggesting Lula's condition is serious. Lula became Brazil’s first working-class president in 2002, and left office last year with high approval ratings.
