Secretary of Defense James Mattis will be a pallbearer at one of Sen. John McCain’s funeral ceremonies—joining members of Congress, former presidents, and family members in honoring the late senator. McCain will have four ceremonies: in his home state of Arizona, the U.S. Capitol, the Washington National Cathedral, and the U.S. Naval Academy. Mattis will be a pallbearer at the Sept. 2 U.S. Naval Academy ceremony, where Gen. David Petraeus will also pay tribute. Former vice president Joe Biden and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg will serve as pallbearers at the National Cathedral ceremony on Sept. 1. McCain’s daughters Meghan and Sidney, President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger are all slated to speak at the cathedral ceremony as well. At the U.S. Capitol ceremony on Aug. 31, Vice President Mike Pence, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Senate Majority and Minority leaders Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will also speak. Fellow Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake will also speak at the Arizona ceremony, which will take place at the state’s capitol Aug. 29. McCain died on Saturday evening from brain cancer shortly after his family announced that he would be stopping treatment.
