The largest protest yet in Yemen took a deadly turn when security forces and government supporters opened fire on demonstrators, killing at least 40 people. Government supporters on rooftops fired on the tens of thousands of protesters massed below, shortly after the demonstrators rose from their noon prayers. Protesters seemed to stand their ground, and some threw rocks and raided nearby buildings searching for snipers. Clashes broke out last week between protesters calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the president's supporters, but security forces used tear gas and fired into the air.
