Illinois law enforcement has reportedly determined that a police officer whose death was being investigated as a murder was in fact suicide. Fox Lake police officer Joseph Gliniewicz was found dead in the woods in the lakeside community on Sept. 1. Gliniewicz radioed that morning about three suspicious-looking men, then was found fatally shot in a remote, marshy area. (No evidence of the men ever turned up.) The medical examiner for months said he would determine the cause of death—suicide or homicide—upon receiving further information from police. Fox Lake police are scheduled to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. local time Wednesday. Citing multiple sources, WGN reports investigators plan to release a criminology report that reveals Gliniewicz was allegedly using police department money for personal purchases. The suicide allegedly followed calls to help audit missing police money, according to WGN.
