It’s a small step toward fair treatment at the Chinese manufacturer that fell under criticism after The New York Times and other news sources exposed worker abuse at Foxconn plants. The company announced Saturday that it would be increasing salaries for its workers to about $400 a month, which translates to a nearly 25 percent increase for some workers. The company, which has not commented on the pay increase, also announced that it will be cutting back on overtime demands on factory workers. More than 1 million workers are employed by Foxconn. The company’s plants were the site of a cluster of worker suicides in recent years, and four other workers were killed in an explosion at a factory that makes Apple’s iPad.
